Auto Toll Road

A truly one-of-a-kind view.

Zig and zag your way to the summit ridge of Mt. Mansfield along the historic Toll Road, where stunning views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains await you.

  • Operating hours are ALWAYS subject to weather.
    • SPECIAL NOTE: On Sunday, August 28,  the Toll Road will open to the public at approx. 1:30 pm due to a morning event.
  • Children ages 5 and under are free.

Vehicle Restrictions

Safety considerations dictate that some vehicles cannot be permitted on the Toll Road:

  • No trailers, RVs, campers, or vans converted to RVs
  • No mopeds or scooters
  • No motorcycles
  • No bicycles

Operating hours are ALWAYS subject to weather.

Please note: Closing time is the last time cars are allowed to start up the Toll Road. ALL vehicles should leave the summit no later than 45 minutes after closing time. The Toll Road gate is locked at 5:00 pm.

How long does it take to drive up the Toll Road?

Most vehicles take about 20 minutes to make the 4.5 mile ascent depending on traffic and weather conditions. On the descent you may need to stop to cool your brakes.

Can I ride a bicycle or hike up the Toll Road?

Because of vehicle traffic on the narrow Toll Road, riding bicycles is not allowed. Hiking is not recommended.

Can I access the summit of Mount Mansfield from the Toll Road?

The Toll Road is the easiest way to the summit of Mount Mansfield. This route starts from the parking lot at the visitors center and follows the Long Trail north towards the chin. The views along the ridge to the summit are superb.

One-way elevation gain: 600 feet

Can I bring my pet up the Auto Road?

You may bring your pets with you. However, they must be on a leash whenever they are out of your vehicle.

Are there days during the season when the Auto Road is closed?

The Auto Road closes whenever weather and road conditions warrant or during special events.
