Please note: Closing time is the last time cars are allowed to start up the Toll Road; ALL vehicles should leave the summit no later than 45 minutes after closing time
Safety considerations dictate that some vehicles cannot be permitted on the Toll Road:
- No trailers, RV’s, campers or vans converted to RV’s.
- No mopeds or scooters.
- No motorcycles
- No bicycles
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to drive up the Toll Road?
Most vehicles take about 20 minutes to make the 4.5 mile ascent depending on traffic, weather conditions. On the descent you may need to stop to cool your brakes.
Can I ride a bicycle or hike up the Toll Road?
Because of vehicle traffic on the narrow Toll Road, riding bicycles is not allowed. Hiking is not recommended.
Can I access the summit of Mount Mansfield from the Toll Road?
The Toll Road is the easiest way to the summit of Mount Mansfield. This route starts from the parking lot at the visitor’s center and follows the Long Trail north towards the chin. The views along the ridge to the summit are superb.
One-way hiking distance: 1.3 miles
One-way elevation gain: 600 feet
Can I bring my pet up the Auto Road?
You may bring your pets with you. However, they must be on a leash whenever they are out of your vehicle.
Are there days during the season when the Auto Road is closed?
The Auto Road closes whenever weather and road conditions warrant or during special events.
