The Joe Kirkwood Invitational
45th Annual- Joe Kirkwood Memorial Tournament
The Joe Kirkwood Invitational is one of Vermont's finest amateur golf events for two-person teams. The event honors former Stowe Country Club Pro Joe Kirkwood, who was an Australian golfer that became world-famous for his trick-shot artistry. Joe was one of the most accomplished touring professionals of the early twentieth century, his best finish being third in the British Open and challenged for the U.S. Open title five times between 1921 and 1934. He became most famous for his trips around the globe with the famed Walter Hagen giving exhibitions and clinics for everyone from Presidents, Royalty, Heads of State, and even the prisoners at Alcatraz.
Kirkwood spent the last years of his life in Stowe and was a big proponent of the game of golf, especially with the youngsters. Fittingly the Joe Kirkwood Tournament benefits the Stowe Junior golf program.
